13주님, 내가 주님께 부르짖고, 첫새벽에 주님께 기도드립니다. 14주님, 어찌하여 주님은 나를 버리시고, 주님의 얼굴을 감추십니까? (시편 88:13-14)
개인적으로 2025년 상반기를 정신없이 보냈다는 생각이 듭니다. 7월4일, 예전같으면 서부지역목회자 가족수양회에 가있었을텐데, 이번에는 집에서는 쉬는 것을 선택했습니다. 미국의 독립기념일, 이 날 집에 거의 있어본적이 없어서 몰랐는데, 제가 사는 동네 앞에는 길을 막고, 동네잔치를 합니다. 게임, 팔락 음식, 그리고 가가호호 문을 열어놓고 내집처럼 드나드는 날이라고 쪽지가 날라왔습니다.
날아든 쪽지를 받아들고는 오늘 마침 심방도 잡혔으니, 일찍을 집을 나가서 늦게 돌아와야겠다는 마음을 먹었습니다. 매년 이런 행사가 있는줄 알았다면 잘 준비했어야 하는데, 가가호호를 그냥 막 드나들 수 있다니~!!! 주여! 이런 고난을.. 뭐 이런 장난스러운 짧은 탄식을 하고는 결정했습니다. 오늘은 심방후에도 교회에 끝날때까지 있어야지!!
쉬는 날, 아마 많은 교인들도 주어진 연휴를 쓰기 위한 계획들을 했을 것입니다. 특별히 어딜 가지 않는 이웃끼리 이런 모임을 준비했다는 것도 그 만큼 7월4일이 미국인들에게 주는 특별한 의미를 생각할 수 있게 해줍니다.
오늘 시편의 노래는 시인이 말할 수 없는 고난 중에 내뱉는 탄식에 대한 내용입니다. 우리가 인지할 수 있는 모든 어려움, 죽음, 고립과 외로움, 응답없는 기도, 하나님이 안계신것 같은 시간들...
이 고난중에 할 수 있는 것은 말로 다 할 수 없는 아픔을 탄식으로 노랙하는 것입니다.
신앙생활은 평탄하고 단단하고, 무사태평의 시간의 허락되는 것이 아닙니다. 막막함에서도 하나님께 간절히 부르짖을수있을때 우리는 신앙생활을 하는 존재로 인식되어질 수 있습니다. 고난을 넘어서 하나님의 새로운 인도하심을 소망할 수 있을때 우리는 주님과 든든히 동행한다고 이야기할 수 있습니다. 이 탄식의 시편이 바로 그런 삶을 증명해주고 있습니다.
7월 이 한주를 보내면, 또 다른 분주함이 기다릴 것입니다. 그 시간을 하나님이 주시는 파도를 잘타며 새로운 삶을 함께 세워갔으면 좋겠습니다.

Personally, I feel like the first half of 2025 passed in a blur. It’s July 4th today—normally, I would be at the West Coast Pastors and Families Retreat, but this year, I chose to rest at home instead.
I’ve rarely been home on Independence Day, so I didn’t realize that my neighborhood closes off the street and throws a block party. A note arrived informing us that there would be games, potluck food, and open-house gatherings where neighbors walk freely in and out of each other's homes.
When I saw the note, I decided—especially since I already had a pastoral visit scheduled for today—that I would leave early and come home late. If I had known this event happens every year, I could have prepared better. The idea of people freely entering and exiting every house? Lord have mercy! After that brief, half-joking lament, I made up my mind: I'll stay at church even after my visit until the party ends!
On a holiday like this, many church members are probably making plans to enjoy the time off. The fact that some neighbors who aren’t traveling decided to organize this gathering shows just how special July 4th is to Americans.
Today’s psalm is a song of lament—one offered in the midst of unspeakable suffering. It speaks of every kind of hardship we can imagine: death, isolation, unanswered prayers, and the terrifying silence of God.
In the midst of such suffering, all one can do is pour out in lament the pain that words cannot fully express.
A life of faith is not about having everything go smoothly or safely. It’s about being able to cry out to God even in the most uncertain and overwhelming times. When we can still hope for God’s new leading beyond our present suffering, we are walking with the Lord. This psalm of lament is evidence of such a journey of faith.
As we wrap up the first week of July, we know a busy season lies ahead. May we ride the waves that God sends and build our lives anew, trusting in His guidance.
